King and pawn versus king is won or drawn by a single concept: the opposition. Your king leads, your pawn follows — and every pawn move you save is a weapon.

Opposition: King Before Pawn

Win against perfect defense

Setting up the board…

The theory

Every chess game that simplifies far enough becomes king and pawn versus king. Knowing this ending cold converts hundreds of half-points over a career.

The opposition. Kings one square apart, facing off: the player who does NOT have to move 'has the opposition' — the other king must give way. The attacker uses it to bulldoze a path in front of the pawn; the defender uses it to stand eternally in the way.

The golden rules. (1) King in front of the pawn, always — a pawn that runs ahead of its king only draws. (2) Keep pawn moves in reserve: when the kings lock in a standoff, one pawn step passes the move back to the defender at the worst moment. (3) Reaching the sixth rank with your king in front of the pawn wins regardless of whose move it is.

In this drill the defender plays tablebase-perfect defense: one careless king step or one premature pawn push and the win is gone — and the trainer will tell you exactly which rule you broke.
